An Energy Audit or Energy Checkup is the best way to understand how your home is working as a system. An energy auditor will collect data and determine the best strategy and highest priority to better your home regarding safety, health, comfort and efficiency.

A diagnostic blower door test measures the amount of air loss in your home. This test provides data that is used by utility groups and local programs that offer incentives. A BPI (Building Performance Institute) building analyst (BA) usually provides this test for existing homes.

Thermography measures surface temperatures by using infrared video and still cameras. These tools see light that is in the heat spectrum. Images on the video or film record the temperature variations of the building's skin, ranging from white for warm regions to black for cooler areas. The resulting images help the auditor determine whether insulation is needed. They also serve as a quality control tool, to ensure that insulation has been installed correctly.
